Absorption enhancement due to scattering by dipoles into silicon waveguides

چکیده
We develop an optical model for absorption enhancement and diffuse reflectance by metal nanoparticles on a silicon waveguide. A point dipole treatment is used, including the effects of the waveguide on both the angular emission spectrum and scattering cross section of the dipoles. The model agrees very well with our experimental results of greatly enhanced electroluminescence and photocurrent from silicon-on-insulator light-emitting diodes and also gives very good agreement with previously reported diffuse reflectance measurements. The results suggest that the main mechanism in the enhancement of diffuse reflectance in this system is a dramatic enhancement in the scattering cross section of waveguided light, rather than a waveguide-mediated dipole-dipole interaction. We also put lower bounds on the radiative efficiency of scattering by the nanoparticles. © 2006 American Institute of Physics. DOI: 10.1063/1.2226334

Optical pulse compression based on nonlinear silicon waveguides and chirped Bragg gratings
Due to the growing demand for higher bandwidth, employing optical devices instead of electronic devices in data transmission systems has attracted much attention in recent years. Optical switches, modulators and wavelength converters are a few examples of the required optical devices. CMOS compatible fabrication of these devices, leads to much more growing of this technology. متن کاملWavelength conversion using parametric Raman scattering in Silicon microstructures
We demonstrated conversion of optical signals from 1550nm band to the 1300nm band in silicon waveguides. The conversion is based on parametric Stokes to anti-Stokes coupling using the Raman susceptibility of silicon. Achieving high conversion efficiency requires phase matching in the waveguides as well as means to reduce waveguide losses including the free carrier loss due to two photon absorpt...

Scaling properties of two photon absorption, free carrier scattering, Raman scattering and Kerr effect in silicon waveguides is reported. It is shown that the dependence of minority carrier lifetime on waveguide dimensions has a profound impact on the performance of nonlinear optical devices built using silicon waveguides.

We investigate the polarization dependence of the spectral broadening of femtosecond pulses inside silicon waveguides by using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations. Our FDTDmodel includes the anisotropic dependency of predominant nonlinear effects in silicon: Kerr effect, two-photon absorption, and Raman effect. In addition, free-carrier absorption and free-carrier dispersion effect...

Nanoscale modal confinement is known to radically enhance the effect of intrinsic Kerr and Raman nonlinearities within nanophotonic silicon waveguides. By contrast, stimulated Brillouin-scattering nonlinearities, which involve coherent coupling between guided photon and phonon modes, are stifled in conventional nanophotonics, preventing the realization of a host of Brillouin-based signal-proces...
